Achieving real and lasting change in the world is neither simple nor cheap. The UN estimates it will cost $1.4 trillion a year to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This kind of capital investment demands that we rethink our approach to sustainable change.
Employee Volunteering can be one way that we rethink our approach. An evolution beyond the traditional corporate models of philanthropy and one-way investment in communities, employee volunteering can enable businesses to be both more involved in development and enable a more dynamic exchange between corporate employees and community groups.
Yet we have limited insight and understanding of the scale, scope, and overall practice of employee volunteering around the world. Further, we don’t know if employees active in corporate volunteering and community investment programs are aware of the SDGs.
The Capacity Mapping Project Table is designed to develop this understanding. It is an innovative effort to measure the capacity of employee volunteers to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 on a regional level.
The UAE is the first region to complete Capacity Mapping in their region. Other regions launching Capacity Mapping projects include Baltimore, Turkey, and the Atlantic Provinces of Canada.

This report maps the capacity of private sector employee volunteering in the United Arab Emirates and shows the practice and potential of activating human capital in this area towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
The UAE is the first region to undertake this project as His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE President, declared 2017 as the “Year of Giving”.
The Stakeholder Table is addressing these questions at a regional level:
What companies currently have some form of employee volunteering?
What is the valuation of employee volunteering as part of overall corporate community investment?
How many other companies are likely to develop a formal employee volunteering program supported by broader corporate community investments?
How aware are volunteer leaders of the SDGs, and how well aligned with the SDGs are volunteering programs?
What barriers inhibit employee volunteering programs from helping to achieve the SDGs by 2030?
